This was cheesy, even for Koontz. I love dogs, and I respect Koontz's sweet descriptions of golden retrievers. But every time the villains popped up in a chapter, I'd brace myself for pages and pages of non-horror. They're mostly just ominous figures, vague attempts to be spooky. Antagonists don't need to be overtly *evil*, but I also don't need to read more than a paragraph of the baddie female painting her fingernails. I don't even want to mention the, er, heavenly aspect to the story. The whole book is unfortunately mostly silly rather than inspiring.

One of my favorite Dean Kootnz books. I love how he features golden retrievers so much as a part of the story. The characters were great and I liked all the little twists this book featured. You kept uncovering things throughout the book.

I read this book as part of a group read for Koontzland in June 2017. Overall a great story four star's but I have to knock off a star too three star's for the ending I was left thinking what have I just read.

Occasionally interesting, mostly disturbing, definitely anti-climatic ending.

A woman with a mysterious past runs a golden retriever rescue. She is fearless and goes to great lengths to protect the animals (and people) in her life. She finances her rescue with funds of an unknown origin, and has a great boyfriend that she hasn't gotten freaky closer with yet because of her past. As the novel progresses, we learn that her boyfriend has some secrets of his own, and that the couple may have to face their (super, super weird) demons together.

The protagonist was fun at first, but she didn't develop much as a character through the course of the novel. None of the characters was interesting - it was very good vs. bad. The ending was a real eye-roller.

[BEGIN RANT] Also, I'm an animal lover, but crazy pet lovers are unnerving to me. DGMW, it's great when people show compassion for animals, period. I guess I just will never understand how people can treat their dogs or cats like spoiled children but have no problem financing the abuse of other (often smarter) animals. I'm not suggesting you eat Fluffy instead of that ham sammie, but doesn't the fact that that idea offends you kinda highlight my point? [END RANT]

I guess Koontz usually writes "terror." I think this falls more in the suspense category. It kept me turning the pages, but like I said, the ending was a weird, fantastical whaaaaa? Worth a couple hours when you're in the right mood, though.

Das ist einer der schönsten letzten Sätze, die ich je in einem Buch gelesen habe! Und das bei dem Genre...

Please note; my star rating on any book is completely subjective and limited to the label for each star.

1 Star I didn’t like it
2 Stars It was okay
3 Stars I liked it
4 Stars I really liked it
5 Stars It was amazing!

If I do actually have something to say about a book other than what my enjoyment factor was, I will write a review and share my thoughts. If I say I didn’t like a book but there wasn’t anything that about it that I thought needed to be shared particularly, then that’s it, I just didn’t like it.

If you’d like to start a discussion about a book or you’d like an actual review, ask any question you like and I’ll be happy to try and comply/respond.

Additional note; I do not feed the trolls. If you don’t have something constructive to say, or if you can’t say it in a respectful way, you won’t get a response from me. Ever.

Okay, so I'm a Dean Koontz fan, although I don't read everything he writes. I'm mostly fond of his Odd Thomas series, although this one sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. It's a really entertaining read, despite the problematic denouement that went by so quickly and ridiculously that at first I thought there might have been some pages missing. Like many things in life, the buildup here is much better than the payoff.

Features a saintly heroine who rescues mistreated dogs and her saintly boyfriend who are up against a psychopath or two. Oh, and supernaturally angelic sort of dog. The psychopaths were too disturbing for me, the saints too saintly, the dog altogether too much. I skimmed through it to see what happened to the tortured little girl, but I don't know why I bothered. And I'm mad at myself for even finishing that much. 1 star.

Well it took me a while to finish this one! Certainly not my favourite Dean Koontz. He had suspense and intrigue and action from the beginning, but I feel the middle of the book could have been cut out. Would have enjoyed this story more as a novella.

Still an enjoyable read.

Happy reading,
