People did this one dirty by comparing it to Lucy Foley’s work. That’s like comparing a musician to Beyonce. Why would you do that to them? Needless to say my hopes were set high going into this one, but so was my skepticism. The book was fine. I wasn’t really surprised and mostly just wanted to know if that main stuck up bitch died cause she suuuuucked. fuck that asshoke killing Gemma I wish he would’ve died even worse than he did

I am sure this book is for someone, but it's not me. I didn't enjoy the characters. The pace was too slow at a bit confusing at the beginning.

There are two stories happening simultaneously here: five old college friends, meeting up once again at a beautiful cliffside house on the sea; and back during those college days following Darryl, their neighbor and hopeful friend. But as things progress, it becomes clear that someone knows what the friends did back during those college days, and they aren't willing to let sleeping dogs lie.
I'm not really sure what's going on with this spate of books about friends reuniting at someone's vacation house, but I feel like it's been an absolute flood lately. The first half of this book was promising, increasingly unnerving. The story was atmospheric, damp and creepy. However, I was less than impressed with the conclusions for both storylines. They felt cliched, and ultimately it seemed like the critical events of the story didn't really align with the buildup provided. I felt disappointed by this and how flat each of the characters personalities seemed. A fast thriller, but just an OK one.

This was so badly structured and didn't need to be half as long as it was. Multiple characters and POVs that were hard to keep track of. Excessive amount of time spent on one particularly unpleasant character for the amount of role they really had. And the incriminating postcards aren't even mentioned until almost halfway through, and the secret keeping them all together barely at all until toward the end. It's like the author forgot she was writing a thriller until she was almost done with it. Thankfully the ending was very satisfying.
Also, not the author's fault, but both audiobook narrators did a terrible job with the American accents.

It was fast-paced. Once you start reading it you can't stop. I did guess one of the twists.
Thank you Harper Paperbacks and NetGalley for the DRC of The Weekend Guests. All opinions in this review are my own.
There is a sense of dread that you know people are keeping secrets and something bad will happen but even the twist isn't that surprising. If anything, Daryl's storyline is more twisty and creepy than the rest of the book.
