So many Easter eggs! I liked it but something about the writing seemed odd to me? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Not quite as charming as Ella Enchanted but still a good Levine fairytale. I also loved getting to know so many of the parental characters we know from EE, that was (with one glaring exception) delightful.

First of all, HOW IS THERE NOT MORE HYPE OUT THERE ABOUT THIS?! Gail Carson Levine does it again. This is another amazing installment in the world of Ella Enchanted, Fairest, and Ever. Lucinda is at it again with her "gifts," and they're just as terrible as ever. This book takes place before the events of Ella Enchanted, and you might even recognize some of the characters (like Ella's mother and fairy godmother!)

This is such a fun fantasy with some romantic elements. It's written for middle-grade readers, but it's so well written that it was entirely enjoyable for this 30-something adult reader (who, admittedly, refuses to grow up...) Gail Carson Levine proves again and again that you can write books that are accessible to a younger audience while still being enjoyable for an adult audience as well, and that you don't have to write "down to" children in order to write books for them.

If I was younger, like when I found Ella Enchanted and fell in love with the story, I might enjoy this more. I do think the best aspects of the first book were lost here - the characters didn't have the same depth

Problematic messages! I REALLY wanted to like this. But wow. It kind of seems like the main message is that women should remember to listen to men, because they know better than you. The friendship at the end is almost redeeming, but...

I loved it. I have read her other book Ella Enchanted also, which I loved too. would definitely recommend it for preteen age and teens.

This story is reminiscent of Ella Enchanted but you get to see how the world was just before she was born. The characters are fun and self reflective. Fun story!

While I was originally enjoying this, I found the last third of the book to be very confusing and chaotic. Evie is a healer who is cursed to two months life as an ogre, turned permanent unless she falls in love and receives a marriage proposal. The first part of the book focused mostly on her transition form human to ogre, and learning how to cope and communicate. The middle starts bringing her back into human drama and communication chaos, and the final part of the book is just focused largely on the people of the court all trying to convince each other of different things. The specifications around her curse and what lifted it seemed to fluctuate in confusing inconsistent ways. Overall I grew more confused and disappointed as I continued to read, often having moments where I was annoyed at the length when it felt like a lot of filler. Definitely not my favorite from this author, though the beginning had more promise.

Not bad, not good. A lot happens, but it doesn't feel like it.

Overall, it lacks character development but was an okay read.
