This is not Ella Enchanted. It doesn’t even feel like Ella Enchanted. And even though Ella Enchanted is my favorite book of all time, I’m oddly okay with the difference between the two. This was clever, funny and heart-warming; I also LOVED the amount of insight we got into some familiar characters from Ella Enchanted.
So pleased with this prequel!

Tbh, I skimmed this for summer reading. It’s charming but also gross because ogres are gross and scary and eat humans. Because Evie gets turned into an ogre, she has to constantly fight the urge to eat people ! A non traditional fairy tale not for the faint of heart or the very young. Grade 4 and up!
I think this is one of my least favorite Gail Carson Levine titles.
While I still enjoyed it, and her, it wasn't as strong as I wanted it to be.
When I had heard this book was coming out, I went to my boss and started screaming about how I needed it. It seemed so cute and Ella enchanted is a book I will forever love.
Ogre Enchanted just seemed a little trivial - not enough character growth, too much sporaticity in the plot, and too much making fun of tropes, I feel.
I found myself confused about where the plot had gone multiple times in the book. Characters would keep showing up unannounced and it made everything even weirder.
I still enjoyed it, mostly, but I wish it had been more.

It was sweet to be able to revisit the world of Ella Enchanted and learn a little more background about Ella's family. Evie is a wholly different character, and I generally enjoyed her adventures and her independent spirit.
Oh, how I adored Ella Enchanted growing up. I had high expectations for this book, and while it missed the mark in some areas, I still enjoyed it. The twist at the end and how Ella's story tied into this one was not at all what I thought it would be, so that was fun. It was hard to fully get behind Evie, Wormy and some of the other characters since they were hard to understand emotionally and not fleshed out as much as I would have liked, but they were still solid characters.
It's time to go back and read Ella Enchanted, still my favorite book by Levine (and one of my favs of all time).

This was cute, sweet, fast paced. It is a must-read for fans of Ella Enchanted, as it gives the backstory of Ella's parents, and how they came to be wed, but it will make you fall in love with a whole new set of characters. The romance is sweet without in any way being racy (middle grade novel), the heroine is a good role model for independence, kindness, and stick-with-it-ness. All in all, it was a fun book.

I had trouble connecting to this story in the beginning, specifically the main character and her not being interested in getting married. I mean, I know she's fifteen and it's somewhat reasonable she's not interested yet, but I've been a total romantic since I was about seven, so I cannot wrap my head around it whatsoever.
It did all start to grow on me as it shifted a bit to more of musing on what being in love is like, and how she would know if she was in love. The main premise is also kind of intriguing, and was handled an interesting way, balancing carefully between kindness and justice in it's take on ogrekind.
On the other hand, it's just uncomfortable and unpleasant in a lot of places. Overall, worth reading, but not nearly as charming as I remember Ella Enchanted being.

Graphic: Cannibalism
The twist on Beauty and the Beast was creative so I had high hopes but the execution left something to be desired (particularly with the pacing of the book). Overall, it was a fun read but I probably won't be rereading it. I enjoyed learning more about the world and characters of Ella Enchanted though.
Always a pleasure to jump back into this world. This had the same charm that I loved from Ella Enchanted, and I loved seeing some of the characters we get to know later on.
Such a fun read! The writing style and humor is the same as Ella Enchanted. I loved the story of adventure and self discovery, though the love story (stories?) doesn't have the same appeal.
