I enjoyed this more than Jane Austen but it still was not my cup of tea. It is a good classic and I can see why people enjoyed it, I'm just not crazy about it. It was ungodly long and boring in many places.
For the first five parts of the book, I was surprised to find that I enjoyed the realist tone that the majority of the book was written in, speaking about the characters and their lives and real emotions and lives. Russian literature usually isn't my thing, mainly because of the tone of the books, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I'd seemingly found a Russian book I was actually enjoying.
But then part 6, and subsequently the rest of the book, came into the picture. Part 6 was so eye wrenchingly boring, that by the end of it, I no longer cared about anything that happened to anyone. Finishing this book made me feel like I was back in the eleventh grade, forcing myself to finish Crime and Punishment for a school assignment. In the end, the characters all seemed to jump ship of their personalities and take on almost new personas.
It's beyond cruel that I read over 500 pages of a book and actually liked it, and then the final 300 pages were just awfully hard to read. I get that there are plenty of people out there who probably enjoyed the tone of the book and the characters all the way through it, but I can't include myself among them.

Took me almost four months to get through, but it was well worth it. Held my attention, and presented an incredibly detailed web of characters and a vivid picture of what life was like in 19th-century Russia. A wonderful roster of flawed characters who all evoked sympathy in their own unique ways.
