Entiendo por qué es un clásico, pero no era para mí. Esto de los dramas familiares y románticos me supera, es como mirar una telenovela histórica.

Rereading a different translation. Interesting - didn’t love this one previously, but after reading up on the translator, I appreciate it more.

Worth reading as a window into daily life in Russia at the time, as well as a glimpse at the social/political forces that were beginning to stir to form the futures of communism. The actual plot I struggled to track, partially because there isn't much of one and partially because it took me so long to read. Not exciting, but I see why its considered a classic.

This is the end sadly of one of my slow reads of 2024 organised by @ashleighjadereads who did a fabulous job with her daily summaries and for coping with us.

Thank you to my buddy readers for your input. It has made this shared reading experience all the better.

How do you review a book that has been part of your life since January?

How do you summarise such a big book with all its subplots and characters and a book that is so well known?

How do you review a book like Anna Karenina after reading and loving War and Peace in 2023?

I've always wondered whether you can like a book if you don't like the main character. My answer has always been negative, until I read Anna Karenina. I found Anna frustrating to say the least. I did quite a few eye rolls when she appeared in our daily chapters. But I did feel for her and what she was going through.

Tolstoy made us go through a lot of emotions, quite a few of his lectures. We dreaded what he would do to our favourite characters and that he would finish his book with yet another epilogue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though I'm not convinced it should have been titled Anna Karenina as it's much more than Anna's story.

To avoid having any Tolstoy withdrawal symptoms I'm still slow reading War and Peace until the end of the year. But what about 2025? I've got his Resurrection book but I know it's a tough one so I'm not sure when I'll read it as I've already got two slow reads planned for 2025: The Count of Monte Cristo and Middlemarch.
