This book was just alright to me. It read slow and seemed to drag on longer than it should have. It felt like it was about 800 pages instead of around 400.
That isn't to say it was a bad book. It was well written, but I just couldn't get interested in the subject. Furthermore, none of the characters are really that likable.
Overall, I wouldn't jump to read this book anytime soon, but who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it a lot more than I did.

A slow burner of a book. It took me a while to get in to but once I got about half way I was sucked in to the story and couldn’t put it down.

I'm so happy I read this! An unexpected pleasure, because I'm not sure it would have crossed my radar for a while if I hadn't noticed the displays around my library for May's CityRead London project. I picked it up on a whim, which, I've got plenty to read at home! I hardly do that!
Anyway, this is gorgeous and fun and interesting, and the writing connected with me straightaway. On nearly every page was a jaw-drop wonderful sentence, and it's incredibly pleasurable to read something so well done. The story balances seriousness and light mystery as if it's a thing easy to do.
There are some great thematic elements, although I was having such a good time I almost didn't even mind about those. But other than giving us a great ending, I think that's the purpose of the dual narrative here, to contrast these young women and the nature of their creativity. One is hiding, and prolific. One is exposed, and stuck. It's a nice arrangement, with shades of selfishness and empathy on all sides. I liked this.
(And it's worth mentioning how enjoyable that ending is, when. It's so much more fun! And more meaningful.)
I liked it all, but Odelle's story in the late 1960's in London had my heart the most. I enjoyed it atmospherically — I'm sad that her gallery isn't a real place I can go to visit, and the character of Quick is really a triumph. She also is going through things I could relate to better. Olive's story is exciting, but Odelle's story could be one of us.
It's been a while since I read an author I was excited to bond with, whose other books I'm eager to go back and find. This one I'm keeping in the club.
Also, visit your library. <3

I did enjoy this but I found it a little slow and over detailed in parts which then did not seem to really matter much. Overall though the story was interesting but I did put it down for a little in the middle.
