I loved everything about this book, the whole setting was beautiful. The characters were very well thought out and i loved their complexities and depth. I especially loved Lawrie <3 Very cute romance story line of Lawrie and Odelle and I really admire Odelle for not giving up her job and going with Lawrie in the end, she is a strong and independent character and we love that.
The 1936 backstory was a bit frustrating because of Olives choices I wanted to scream when she gave credit to Isaac for her paintings and it was a secret they protected too well. Could’ve never been me tbh. But again I loved how everyone in this setting had their own thing going on it was never shallow. Isaac was right about Olive. Olive was just a stupid teenager she was young and nothing was really important to her. Teresa was also an immature teen but she looked out for Olive and the fact that she indirectly caused all the events after is unthinkable and she had to live with that on her mind till the end of her life. I’d go insane.
Finally I think the ending was remarkable by my standards too, sometimes some secrets just stay secrets and who knows maybe Odelle will be the last person who ever knows what truly went down in 1936 and Olive unforgotten invisible when Isaac who didn’t deserve it, might still be known for centuries.
Deaths, secrets, unfollowed love - all my favourite tropes.

The premise of the story is a good one but the delivery is slow and littered with conversations that lead to nowhere. I enjoyed the story set in the 1960's while the other portion set in the 1930's was incredibly boring and dragged. Honestly, I think it was the great cover art that pulled me in but didn't deliver.
"...Is there ever such a thing as a whole story, or an artist's triumph, a right way to look through the glass? It all depends on where the light falls."
Loved the way this book looked at art and creation, and turned the general perception of a muse on it's head. I very much appreciated the depth and strength of the female characters, how they propped themselves and each other up (mostly) without dependence on a man. I really enjoyed the mystery as well, the discovery of Quick's true identity was not what I'd expected. A solid read, though the prose was a little clunky at times; now I have to put "The Miniaturist" on my list.

It reads fast, but I found the plot predictable and struggled to connect with the characters.

Really enjoyed Burton's second novel, set in London in the '60s and Spain in the '30s. Great characters. The only flaw I found is that she wrapped up everything just a little too neatly. Didn't leave the reader wondering about anything, or with anything more to imagine. Still, overall great.
