Highly enjoyed this book. Enjoyed the two timelines, and the suspense. The foreshadowing leaves one puzzles. Although the plot is exceptionally perfect, I did like how the book is like a puzzle.

I absolutely adored [b:The Miniaturist|18498569|The Miniaturist|Jessie Burton|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1392415313s/18498569.jpg|25328659], so was super excited for Burton's second novel. Alas, I was pretty disappointed with The Muse. For me, the characterisation just felt so off. The motivations and desires of these people often seemed obscure to the point of unbelievability; nobody felt rounded enough so as to truly accept what these characters were about. The dialogue felt particularly strained, especially that between Olive and Isaac, and Odelle and Lawrie. None of this was helped by the constantly shifting timeline structure, or the overworked element of mystery.

When Burton delved into the theory of artistry and creativity, that's when The Muse held glimpses of interest for me - but even then, these often felt like strange, page-long epiphany-dumps.

Overall, obviously, this book fell flat for me. That said, I'll still be keen to see what Burton writes next.

Listened to the audio- narrators were great. It took me a REALLY long time to get into this story though. Both time periods are out of my usual range and there is a lot of detail in the writing. I almost stopped listening to be honest. Most of the characters in the past timeline I found thoroughly frustrating. But I kept going and it was worth it. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and I especially liked how as it got further along in the story there were more obvious connections between the two time periods.

HATED. Couldn't finish. boring.

I found it a book quite interesting, the way it is written (dual time frame) and the mistery surrounding the painting hooked me since the very begining. Every end of chapter, when it changes the time frame, has an astonishing cadence that leaves you looking forward to read more and more. It also surprised me because, when I thought I had worked out the solution to the mistery, it results that my mind had deceived me.
Absolutely stunning!

A young woman in Spain in the 1930s. A young woman in London in the 1960s. A painting. Two stories become one.
