Let me start by saying that the plot for this book is literally EPIC! Not only do we have a fight between good and evil for the lives of every person in the world, but we got star-crossed lovers like never before.

Relic & Ruin had me hooked from page 1, excited to see what new hell the characters found themselves in as the chapters continued. There is enough adventure in this book to keep you going and a bit of mystery to keep you guessing.

There, of course, were also things that I found lacking:

•There is an abnormally large cast of characters. I sometimes… often times found myself highly confused. During editing, I think a lot of them could have been cut out of the story and nothing would have changed.

•At times, the story was a little all over the place. Not only do we have what is in essential, a battle between good & evil, but then we have what seemed to be an Arthurian retelling… oh and also, there are characters from fairytales. There’s Peter Pan, but just an invisible version that only 1 character can see, the Mad Hatter, Hansel & Gretel… you get the picture. I love the overall concept, but we can’t put every idea into 1 story.

And while I do find great and less than great aspects to the story, I definitely feel like it could have really been helped by being edited… a couple more times. Also, there is a lot that wasn’t explained or dealt with, so if this is a standalone, I’m going to be even more confused.

It's not the book's fault. It's just me. The story started out well and I was really enjoying it but then there were suddenly so many characters introduced together and everything was happening at the same time that I got confused and lost interest.

ARC provided by NetGalley and Wattpad Books in exchange for an honest review.

All over the place, some stuff didn’t make sense. Transitions weren’t smooth either from one topic to another

Read the book for a challenge so I didn’t even read the synopsis on it when I started. The characters from all your childhood nursery rhymes made their presence known in this book!!! It was enjoyable but there were sooo many characters, I found myself going back trying to follow who was who and on what side they were on. Great storyline!

I was given this ARC by the publisher in return for an honest review. Thank you so much to the publisher!!

Nyx was a necromancer (someone who can raise the dead), but was raised to be a Reaper (the enemy of necromancers). Erebus is a ghost with u finished business who works with other ghost Reapers. The only thing is Erebus has no idea where he comes from or how he died. When someone starts raising the dead in their area, Nyx and Erebus meet and feel drawn to each other. And after they keep meeting to help take down the army of the dead; they discover they are far more than they thought, and they are far more linked than they ever thought possible.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the dynamics between Reapers and Necromancers and how dark and gritty it was. I loved the dynamic between Nyx and Erebus. I’m a sucker for fated loves. I also loved all the supporting characters. And how we followed around all the different aspects of the story, in our Earth, Dermont, and the Hallows. The magic system was very cool!

I did feel like the book was rushed and could have done a lot more world building and character development. I feel like we got just the basic rundown of the different worlds before we were moving on to the next. I also thought the characters could have been developed far more, if you’re going to have that large of a supporting cast I feel like there needs to be a lot more background and detail in what’s happening to them. Sometimes there would only be 1 paragraph explaining what’s happening to a particular character before we were moving on to the next perspective.

That being said I did thoroughly enjoy it, it kept my attention and I really was invested by the end. I’m giving this 3 stars, definitely a physical copy buy for me and I’ll definitely read any other sequels that come out!

You’re immediately thrusted into this strange yet fascinating world. We journey along learning about our main characters and their struggles. Such a beautiful yet haunting world full of suspense and danger lurking around every corner. I love the story and the character development, however there are just too many characters to keep straight that have no real purpose propelling the story forward. Also, there’s a bunch of lore to keep up with as well which can also be a bit disorienting if you’re just starting out reading fantasy. I overall really liked this book.
