This didn't touch me like "My mortal enemy" or "My Antonia", but it was very satisfying all the same. The characters are beautifully constructed and I believe every single one of them and the plausibility of their actions. Like a story that has been told before but repeats itself fiercely, these people have existed countless times in different circumstances throughout history. The wild, reckless girl who repents her decision, the bright boy who wants what he can't have, the woman having to deal with lesser men and proving herself again and again without getting any of the credit. There's nothing new about this. There was nothing new about America either. The difficulty of settling was felt before wherever there were humans and land. But are these stories any less enchanting just because they're old? Or on the contrary, they should be admired because they stand the test of time and keep on happening to us despite all of our best wishes and different scenarios? A person trying to make a home out of nothing at all, putting all their hopes in a future they won't be able to enjoy fully because they are wasting their youths building it, even though they have no guarantee that this enterprise will be even remotely successful, that seems to me like the kind of story I wouldn't mind reading and admiring again and again and again, as long as it's told with this amount of care and talent.
