Beautiful prose, but could not develop any emotional connection whatsoever to these characters apart from Ivar. I came away wishing the bulk of the story was focused on him instead.

what can i say i’m a sucker for a pastoral!!!

I previously read #3 in this series (My Antonia) and hadn’t at the time realized it was a series. Now, I’ve read book 1, O Pioneers, and really enjoyed this one, too! I like Willa Cather’s writing style. Guess I better read #2 soon!

What a wonderful book. I'm ashamed of myself for not having read it before. On the other hand, it may well be that I needed to be where I am in my life now to appreciate it. So I guess I read it exactly when I should have. There's nothing crazy-amazing in the story itself...it's just one of those books that is full of little observations that resonate.

A quick, timeless read, but not what I expected. It went from a history of taming American prairie land and an in-depth picture of some amazing characters to a mello-dramatic romance/tragedy.
