This is what I wanted from a fairytale retelling! Alyce is a Vila and is despised for her dark powers. She spends her time living as a 'Dark Grace'; Graces are fae-blessed humans who are able to use their golden blood to craft elixirs for beauty, wisdom, etc. Alyce meets Princess Aurora and finds that they are not so different after all.
I loved this story so much. It was both original and beholden to the fairy tale it is based on, which is 'Sleeping Beauty'. I love the route it took where Aurora and Alyce fall in love and it because of the hate of others that turns Alyce into the "Maleficent" we know from the fairy tale. There were so many small details that I loved were included like the spinning wheel, the dragon**, the name Briar, and so many more, all of which gave just the right amount of Sleeping Beauty to reinforce that it is in fact a retelling.

That book was INCREDIBLE! It kept twisting and turning right till the end and I loved it so much. Alyce and Aurora were a great couple, some lesbians was just what the sleeping beauty story needed. Normally I find it quite difficult to get hooked on fantasy books but this one was so well written I was hooked immediately. I don't know how I'm going to wait for the next book I need to know what happens!
