I was going to rate this 2.5 but the ending did gag me.
This book had so much potential. i was interested in the world and its very hard to mess up a fairy tale retelling. especially queer one. but there was so much telling instead of showing.
oh aurora and alyce spend so much time together… but it’s just told to us.
alyce learns to master her powers. told and very rarely shown.
the story of the realm is told in the most boring way possible.
at first i thought it was because the first 100 pages of a fantasy book always have exposition (even if that does not justify it for me) but half way through the book i realized it was just written that way.
alyce is an interesting character but the world is limited by her pov.
like i said though the last 60 pages got me interested in the sequel but idk if i’ll really get to it.

WOWZERS
Is this the sapphic Wicked I never asked for?
Naw, but since I never wanted that,Malice is better.
Alyce is the green Cinderella turned Maleficent for this world's cursed queer sleeping beauty.
All hail Heather Walter, modern Queen of surprise twists. The plot gets SO JUICY toward the end. Don't go in expecting a typical happy ending, though. Expect outrageous things.
People in their reviews complained about tropes and this being cliche.... but I didn't really get that from it--as long as You're down for vague fairy tale refs. I didn't find it especially tropey or predictable.
Just the horrifying nature of the world--in which half-fae weirdos spend their literal lifeblood for rich people to dye their hair or clear their zits--makes this book pretty atypical. Actually, the worldbuilding is really unique. I guess I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but I definitely haven't read anything like this.
Um, but, fair warning: the sequel does not live up. Like, just pretend like this was the end.
