This book was much better than expected. I thought it was going to be too much "I'm not like other girls" but it managed to just avoid it. Already placed the sequel on hold at the library.

This is a lesbian retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Aurora's bloodline is cursed and she will die if the curse isn't broken with a true loves kiss. She's kissed many princes but none of them have done the trick. Alyce is a Dark Grace is a wielder of dark magic the same magic responsible for Aurora's curse. After befriending Aurora, Alyce is determined to help, but will she be able to or is she cursed to be the villain.

I thought this was a unique and fun twist on this classic story. I was never a fan of Sleeping Beauty so I did enjoy this a lot more than the original story. I loved the characters and enjoyed the wicked and dark twist this has. There are some plot holes but I was able to overlook it with how much I enjoyed Alyce's character. I liked how the story unfolded but found myself getting bored. The romance though was cute and I was invested, overall worth reading if you like retellings!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"I am the villain"

Do you know that feeling when you fall helplessly for the morally grey character? Maybe they are just misunderstood and they really have a heart of gold? This book gives you all of those feelings and more.

-enemies to lovers
-magical secret lovers
-misunderstood MCs
-who needs a prince when the princess chooses for herself

Of course, these are just a few of the tropes that I recognized in this. To be honest it was perfectly gay and I fell in love with Alyce and Aurora and their slow fall into love.

Malice is set in the kingdom of Briar. In Briar, Graces use their magical blood to keep the people of Briar happy and healthy. Each grace has a specific magic, like beauty or wisdom. These graces often serve only the wealthy as their magic is highly sought after. These graces use their magic until they fade away and are replaced with younger graces. However, in Briar, there is only one Dark Grace. Alyce has Vila blood making her magic used solely for evil purposes. She cannot create or sustain anything, only destroy. When the kingdom announces the search for the princess's true love to break her curse, Aurora only has one year to live. She is set on breaking her curse without the help of a male suitor. Her passion brings her to the Dark Grace's door where together they try to find a cure. Through it, all, magic and mayhem ensue and the retelling of Sleeping Beauty becomes evident.

Malice was everything I wanted and MORE. I picked this up because I was in the mood to read a fairytale retelling. I remembered this was *maybe gay* and I wanted to see if it lived up to the sapphic fantasy hype. I was not disappointed. I immediately fell in love with Alyce and Aurora, because they were such dynamic characters. They were fun to read because their motivations were so misguided. Neither of them ever really had much control of their fate, and this led them to make bad decisions.

Overall I enjoyed this sapphic retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I felt that it was well-rounded with only a few plot holes. I am looking forward to the next one!

It was just incredibly slow and no development of the characters. I desperately wanted a sapphic retelling but it all felt surface level.

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book. I hated the last 1/4. Nothing that had been developed for the character seemed to mesh with the ending, and all in all the character development basically was thrown completely out the window. I don’t believe the possession angle was enough to make this true. And I don’t buy the revenge from the spirit pushing here other because the character development from the first 3/4 didn’t show this being possible. Though it was nice to see an LGBTQ+ aspect in a rewrite of a typical princess story, it felt more like obsession especially when Alyce was practicing her magic and shape shifted into Aurora. Would not recommend.

I had heard nothing about this book prior to receiving the arc. When I realized it was an LGBT sleeping beauty retelling, I was very excited to see where it would go and I was not disappointed. Will definitely be recommending this book upon its release.

Loved it

Really great retelling of sleeping beauty. I enjoyed it. There was a lot of mysteries in here that slowly unfold. On to the second one!
