Received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book. It is my true opinion only.

It's been a long time since I've given a book a rating less that 3 stars.

I was incredibly excited when I got this.
Unfortunately I was disappointed.

There I was thinking it was going to be a sort of Valentines version of My True Love Gave To Me, only to find that it mainly had extracts from books that are already released.

It does have about 7 short stories that are original. Like there is one from David Levithan.

I really enjoyed Malorie Blackman's opening story! it was so good! It just kinda dropped from there :/

What I did like was there is a lot of diversity in the stories; like LBGT and different skin colour.

Regretfully this book just wasn't for me, but that doesn't mean it won't be for you!
I've liked books people have hated and not liked books people have loved.
It's the way of life!
That's why I always say to give every book a try if it intrigues you. You may be surprised :)

Overall rating: 3 stars
As with all anthologies, there were some stories I really liked and others that were not my thing. Overall, I wasn't a huge fan of this collection as it mostly comprised of extracts and I don't really see the point in those. I would have much preferred it if they had all been short stories.

1. Humming Through My Fingers by Malorie Blackman - 4/5 stars
Cute

2. [Extract from] More Than This By Patrick Ness - 3/5 stars
So I gather from the synopsis that this a male-male romance/sci-fi, but the extract seemed a bit odd. Didn't really give us an insight into much.

3. [Extract from] The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle - 2/5 stars
It's weird getting an extract from random points in a book because you don't know what led to this happening. Not really a fan.

4. [Extract from] If I Stay by Gayle Forman - 3/5 stars

5. Tumbling by Susie Day - 2/5 stars
This whole short story is just like "Don't know if I told you, but I'm a Sherlock fan". Essentially just screams about Sherlock for most of it.

6. [Extract from] Trouble by Non Pratt - 4/5 stars
I would definitely continue on with this book!

7. [Extract from] Rani and Sukh by Bali Rai - 3/5 stars
Again, not a fan of just getting random, out of context chunks of books. It's weird.

8. [Extract from] You Against Me by Jenny Downham

9. [Extract from] 13 Little Blue Envelops by Maureen Johnson - 3/5 stars

10. [Extract from] Junk by Melvin Burgess - 2/5 stars

11. [Extract from] Nought and Crosses by Malorie Blackman - 3.5/5 stars

12. Gentlewoman by Laura Dockrill - 4.5/5 stars

13. [Extract from] Heroic by Phil Earle - 2/5 stars

14. Miss Lucy Had A Steamboat by David Levithan - 3/5 stars

15. [Extract from] I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak - 4/5 stars

16. [Extract from] Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith - 4/5 stars

17. [Extract from] Echo Boy by Matt Haig

18. [Extract from] Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

19. Endless Love: The Valentine of Daniel and Lucinda by Lauren Kate - 4/5 stars

20. [Extract from] Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick - 2.5/5 stars

21. The Liar's Girl by Catherine Johnson - 3/5 stars
Really weird perspective. I would've enjoyed it a lot if it was told differently.

22. The Unicorn by Juno Dawson - 5/5 stars

23. [Extract from] Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman - no rating

24. [Extract from] We Were Liars by E Lockhart - 4/5 stars

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Wasn't a huge fan of this anthology personally as I was really hoping for more original stories but the majority of these are snippets from already published books. One or two stories seemed a little out of place but for the most part it was a pretty cohesive collection. A few of the stories required a little more context though the gist of the scene came across fairly well.

The best thing I could take away form this is I now definitively know whether I will or won't read certain books based on the extracts presented.

This book was amazing. It had a real variety of love stories. There were some original short stories and some extracts from books. The stories were all written by well known YA authors.

My favourite story was 'the unicorn' by James Dawson. It was superb. I genuinely think that it is worth buying the book for just this story. I went through all the feels in this 10 paged story. I had to put my kindle down and just take in the full effect of the story. It is definitely the best short story I have ever read and that includes 'the magic finger' by Roald Dahl.

I would definitely recommend this book to you it is great, especially for a mourning period. I give this book a 5/5 star rating. Just go PRE-order it.

(I received this book in exchange for an honest review.)

Love Hurts contains a fantastic mix of authors and genres, and it’s a book perfect for people wanting to try out an author without committing to a whole book that they may not enjoy. As a head’s up – it does contain quite a few excerpts from already published books that you may have already read, which was something that I didn’t expect, but on the whole, I’d say it’s well worth a read.

There is so much diversity in this book! It’s absolutely excellent to see so many different topics tackled with so many different characters. It really fits in with the theme of the entire book. Love it’s black and white, it’s extremely diverse, so it’s right that the book reflects that.

If you only read one story from Love Hurts, make it Gentlewoman by Laura Dockrill. Such an important story with such an important message, and it made my heart hurt with everything Dani was going through both mentally and physically.

Love Hurts has made me desperate to pick up some books, and cemented the fact that I won’t be picking certain ones up, and that was what I really enjoyed about it. I was able to revisit some old favourites (both stories and authors), and added new authors to my list who I can’t wait to read more from.

Love Hurts is an excellent compilation of stories and extracts from some of the most treasured writers of contemporary young adult fiction. What I loved about this collection is that it was broken down into unseen pieces of fiction (short stories) and that the other selection was like a publisher’s sampler which after reading all the extracts I ended up with a list of books that I wanted to find out more about.

I could understand why some people may feel cheated by this – almost like it is a way to make more money but I genuinely found it useful. No point buying every book when I only liked the sample of a few of them.

Love Hurts gets two big thumbs up from me.

It is very rare that I dislike a book. Very rare. I love all sorts of books, I just love words. In this case they let me down.

Love Hurts is anthology of young adult love stories; some are brand new and exclusive to the book, others are just short extracts taken from other published books. I'm trying to think of something positive to say about this book but I honestly can't.

I had many problems with the book however the main issue for me was the concept. An anthology of YA, great to discover new authors, right? Sadly not. There seems to be something so invasive about reading about love over and over again, not knowing any character background or seeing there relationship develop. To me it feels like the mildest form of porn. It makes me uncomfortable. In addition, I've read most of the books in it, I know the characters well. It was nice to revisit them, but I don't remember any of them for their love scenes, I would have like different extracts which truly show the best of their personalities. That brings me to the main problem, STEREOTYPING. The YA genre has been given a reputation of soppy love stories, and this book hands the critics what they want on a plate. Grasshopper Jungle, I Am The Messenger, More Than This, these are more than love. They are thought provoking, society challenging, complex novels, yet they have been chosen to be surmised as books about "modern, star crossed lovers".

I can't be wholly negative, for I am sure there are some people who would love this book. Maybe I'm just too old for it, maybe it would suit younger teens. If you like the sound of it, give it a go, it may become one of your favorites and we can argue our points of view. I'd love that. Books are very personal and for me this just wasn't the one.
