I think I would have appreciated this book a bit more if it weren’t so slow! I felt like the beginning took forever to get to the good stuff, and even then the world building is really not as clear cut as I felt it could have been so I felt like it kept dragging on. The middle was giving hunger games vibes the whole time and it was great besides I thought Nasir’s internal monologue was so easily swayed by like the first time he saw Zafira… idk like another villain that’s hardly actually bad which is good because obviously we have to root for him, but he could’ve at least held out a little longer. It felt a bit redundant at times and had too many things going on especially during the action scenes like whaaaat! Anywaayyy it was a quick read (despite being slow) once I got through the slow stuff. Pretty predictable plot twist and I’m surprised people hate on Sjm and TOG when this has some of the same exact elements ??
Evil dad that’s actually controlled by some eviler being??
idk I had higher hopes for this book and it was just ok the forced family felt well, forced

it's 3.5 stars but ykw i had fun reading it so 4 is fine, i think my biggest problem was the whole deen thing... spoilers!!!! this death and zafiras reaction was just so weird throughout the whole thing... how she moved on so fast like oh this guy i just promised to marry... oh he's dead killed by these two guys but oh one of them is kinda hot... of one of them has a fun personality... oh they're my friends now i can't leave them... all within what... 5 days? i get that they're under a lot of pressure but this is still so... weird to me... made me

I can't make it through act 1. While the world building is well-done, I simply am not interested in the outcome.

Unfortunately upon reread this did lose a star :/ on reflection the romance feels very sudden and a little underdeveloped.

I love fantasy and this has everything I didn't even knew I needed. The whole story and world building is great, makes you think you know everything there is but then hits you with more. The cliffhanger at the end is cruel, but so sweet at the same time. It leaves you want it for more. Really loved this book and story!

I'm giving this book 4 stars as nearing the end I found it very enjoyable (or as enjoyable as one can find a book when rushing through it and not focusing as one would like) and found myself really growing attached to the zumra. I do enjoy the romance and yearning that was shown in the book. The first few chapters felt like a drag and I was waiting for them to arrive at their destination and for the real plot to start, although they did help with the world-building. Some other chapters felt a little random, out-of-place and confused me when I initially read them but as I continued the confusion eventually dissappeared. The writing was also enchanting although I found the repetition of words constantly a bit unreasonable(?) but I guess that is just Hafsah's writing style. Other than that I really look forward to reading the next book! (I plan to reread this one... maybe?)
