Good book, but hard to read.  I had to take several breaks while reading.  I'm glad I read it, but once was enough.

Think of the most evil bad guy you can create (white supremacist in double-secure isolation prison lockdown), and the most-innocent of protagonists (11-year old girl, murdered mother, father just out of jail, and best-friend a stuffed bear she puppets her emotions through), and you see where this begins. It's a thrill-ride in which the girl discovers she's more like her father than anyone could have imagined. Throw in the kind-hearted detective, the over-her-head in evil love interest, and this thing flies by.

Dark, violent, but very good. An impressive first novel that won the Edgar award in 2018. I enjoyed the lean writing style and found Polly, the eleven year old whose world is turned upside down when her father shows up after school one day, to be a fascinating character.

This book was WILD. So much action and intensity.

All 11-year-old Polly McCluskey knows about her dad is that he is in prison, which is why she’s surprised when he shows up to her school and says she needs to go with him. Reluctantly she goes, later learning that the reason they are on the run is because a “green light” has been put on Nate McCluskey and Polly by the Aryan Steel leader from prison as revenge on Nate for killing his brother. The story details father and daughter’s journey on the run, and the lessons Polly’s dad teaches her, far from your ordinary parenting.

There are a lot of characters introduced in the story which made me double back a few times, but I got it for the most part. It wasn’t slow at all like some thrillers get when you’re trying to figure out what’s going on. If you like action and fighting, this is a good one for you!

A surprise read that I ended up adoring. Maybe a smidge unrealistic, but my gods, powerful, angry, vengeful, and wonderful.

plus, fuck those skinheads.
