much much better than hear the wind sing but not entirely wow-ed by this novel either. got really fricking good at the end with the pinball chapters. i didn’t like how none of the women have names in the book. i’m not sure if it serves a purpose metaphorically but it got annoying and gross fast.
slow-paced
There were few things to take away from this novel.
One of those things was that Murakami's writing of women is...impolite.
I'm not entirely sure how to put it. Objectifying.
He write the twins as mildless beings, who's only character plot point is to end up in the man's bed at the end of each chapter. He doesn't even give them names, just numbers, 208 & 209... :'(

There's only so much a person can do, she said.
Maybe so, said I, but that doesn't change a thing...
It's over, she said, it's all over.
A strange but worthy sequel to Hear the Wind Sing featuring many of the same characters. A bit too peculiar at times, and a little overlong, but overall this work is an excellent prequel to Murakami's strangeness. Now on to the Rat #3!

I enjoyed book two in The Rat series so much more than the first book and Murakami's debut. This installment takes place ten years after book one and follows the same two characters: The Rat and the unnamed narrator. Our narrator now has two twin girlfriends that he lives with, develops an obsession with finding his pinball machine called Spaceship, and talks about his life in the past ten years like becoming a translator. Meanwhile, the Rat is still drinking and wandering around whilst also giving insight into his POV which we missed out on in book one.
Overall, I enjoyed my time, but this novella was 132 pages and I know I won't be attached enough to give it higher than that. I did not read this edition but read the vintage international edition that combines his first two books. I do think this was fantastically written and I even annotated some of it, but in the long-run, I think this Murakami will just get wiped away in comparison to the other Murakami books I'll be reading this year!
