Murakami in both Pinball and Hear The Wind Sing has a certain wading way of writing regardless of the events of the story that fills my brain with a pleasant buzz. The small tragedies, triumphs, and comedies experienced by the character are covered with little deviation from the established tone. Loneliness, tenderness, comradery, failure; all are treated as equal passengers for both stories and I really like that.

I wasn't a fan of the first half of the book. I was bored and even at certain times uncomfortable and I can't really say why. The second half was a lot better though. The Rat's portion of the book was my favorite. His story is still so mysterious and sad. If there was a standalone book about him, I would totally read it. I want more of the Rat!!! Overall a solid read.
