a lil better than the last one!! gets a bit closer to the stuff i like about murakamis style but still generally kinda disappointing going back to

The sequel to Hear the Wind Sing. Murakami also wrote this one at his kitchen table in the early mornings after he'd closed up his Jazz bar. It feels weird to really call it a sequel, because neither of the books had any real plot to speak of. I guess what makes it a sequel is that it consists of the same narrator and his friend "The Rat". They are a little older this time around, but still drinking just as much beer and listening to just as much music. It's noticeably better put together than Hear the Wind Sing. The themes of loneliness are also stronger in this one; I felt it had more of the typical Murakami vibe from his other stuff—almost dreamlike. A sense of melancholy permeates pretty much every page and some unusual (robotic?) characters manage to contribute to the atmosphere.

I don't feel like I'll remember much from Pinball, 1973 or Hear the Wind Sing in a few weeks, but they were fine reads and an interesting look at a writer in his early days.
