Had a lot of promise but ultimately fell short. Too repetitive in parts and the writing style was a bit tough. But the topic was good and interesting way of presenting in a dystopian style.

Really wish I had DNF’d this when I first started feeling bored. Concept was interesting and this could have been a great short story but instead it goes on & on while hammering you over the head with the “message”, which just wasn’t that deep.

So the concept is excellent. It’s dark but rooted in reality - especially feels real with respect to how the state treats poor brown and black women. I love the sci fi/dystopian concept - and it’s v much a dystopian fiction novel so I feel like you gotta know that going in (and I like that genre) - but my main problem is there’s no plot arch to the story. Once you hit the main concept of the school - after that the story kinda flatlines. There’s no big plot twist or improvement towards the second half of the book - it stays slightly monotonous and doesn’t develop any further into a satisfying or well thought out ending - which is a shame cause it has so much potential to go further.
I haven’t stopped thinking about this since I finished reading it. Incredibly compelling and utterly gut-wrenching.
