I REALLY disliked Maite. She was annoying and didn't like animals! Also, her dreamer mentality was irritating. As was her obsession with Secret Romance. I LOVE some books but I don't compare real life to them, because that's just unreasonable! I much preferred Elvis! I saw the "twist" coming miles away, so overall a disappointment especially as I enjoyed Mexican Gothic! The narrator was decent.

A gorgeously written noir, following a young girl's disappearance after her involvement with the tumultuous political climate of 1970's Mexico. Though the attempts to find her are what drives the plot, Moreno-Garcia still manages to flesh out the protagonists beautifully; gentle, lonely and a little pathetic, both Maite and Elvis manage to grow steadily on you. This is so different from Moreno-Garcia's previous novels I've read that it makes me wonder whether there is anything she cannot do.

Not my typical genre but I ended up really enjoying this book. It’s a crime/mystery story about a Mexican woman who goes missing and the opposing groups trying to find her. It’s full of violence and intrigue and keeps you on the edge of your seat with all the twists and turns.

Velvet was the Night is written in classic noir style and filled with political intrigue based on real events. While it didn’t really feel like much actually happened in this book, it read a lot like a cozy mystery, and made for an enjoyable read. I especially liked the blending of Maite & Elvis’s POVs to give different insights into the issues and cultural elements of the time. This is a great noir crime fiction rooted in Mexican history, and if you want to try out this genre, or are already a fan of the noir style, I’d recommend this one!
