I started out liking this book, but I just had to quit. I am over half way through it and no longer care about what happens to Tonio or Guido. I just don't like them anymore. They have become two of them most boring characters...probably ever.

The constant whining and sobbing is one thing, but what's even worse is that the storyline keeps repeating itself over and over again. And it's so sllloooowwwww moving. I don't usually mind slow moving character driven books, but these characters are horrifyingly boring. And they shouldn't be! They are castrati singing beautiful music, in Naples! They should be interesting!

I enjoyed some of the vampire chronicles books. Granted I read them years ago, but I don't remember her dialogue being so jilted.

Overall, I am not impressed.

Listened to the abridged audiobook of it. It's only 4 hours long and nearly, fantastically incomprehensible because of how much was cut out of the 600 page book. Do I want to read the whole thing now? Not sure!

While the writing style isn't my favorite as it can be difficult to follow at times, I still feel the book is worth a read given its uniqueness and intriguing oddity. The colorful depiction gave me a new appreciation for the historical era and culture. It fills a narrative niche I didn't realize needed attention. Overall, I enjoyed reading it, but probably will not seek out other Anne Rice works if the writing style is consistent with this one.

A little too detailed for my taste (I don't need to know what everyone is wearing at all times... and come to think of it, I felt the same way about Larsson's Millenium Trilogy). But this is my first Anne Rice and it wasn't about vampires, so I put up with it. I read the reviews before starting this book and thought that it was pretty silly for people to say that the book was too long. I'm not sure how long Rice's books usually run, but having read +1000 page books, I thought to myself, "You people don't even know what a long book is!" But now that I've read it, I feel like it did take too long for her to tell this story. Yes, I understand the need to stretch it out to show the passage of time, but given that the book takes place over about 4 years, there are other ways to have acheived character growth.
