I started reading Erdrich in college in the late 80's, and she quickly became a favorite of mine.

This one took me a while to sink into. I found the deeply poetic prose a bit thick to slog through in the short bursts of reading time I had. Not until I allowed myself several long jaunts with it did I become properly enveloped in the dream that is her world.

Now as I look at my shelves with her books, I can't remember if some of them (Antelope's Wife, Butcher's Club) I read, or bought with the intention of reading. Its been so many years they've lingered on my shelf.

I guess it's time to revisit them.

(And where is my copy of Love Medicine?!?!)

Beautifully written epic style story of how lives intersect and inform each other. Based on a Native American reservation during the 20th century, exploring themes of Catholic conversion and cultural preservation. The plot is intricate and surprising and pulls you along.

Made me weep twice, made me laugh a few times, and I read it in 3 days.

I think I got at least 75% of the way through this book physically earlier this year, before I had to set it down because Erdrich's love for exceedingly long chapters did not play well with my ADHD. But I am so desperately glad I was able to pick it up again on audio.

I positively loved this book.

I absolutely loved this book. So far, I have never been disappointed by Louise Erdrich. This is such a warm, intricate book about gender, belonging, belief systems and how to judge a person's life work. I am sure you can read it as a standalone but it's so so rewarding to have read the other Love Medicine books before and get back to some of your favourite characters. To dive again into the relationships between Nanapush and Father Damian/ Agnes and Fleur and Father Damian/ Agnes was so wonderful.

This book is rich, dark chocolate, best enjoyed in small, savoring bites. The way Erdrich writes about Agnes the nun turned Agnes the lover turned Modeste the priest is stunning. She is unmatched in her ability to weave a narrative in ways that surprise and delight. Luxuriate in this book!

Erdrich’s writing is dense and rich; the world she paints is multi-layered and complex with complicated and interesting characters.

One of the most lol funny scenes setting up a death and then the wake which became moving I have read in a novel.

I have not been book shopping in a long time, and when I have been near books, my intuition for great books had been dulled. Nothing on the shelf spoke to me. Today, I browsed the bookstore shelves and this book spoke to me (literally calling my name and drawing my eyes to its cover). So far I'm 60 pages in and relieved to know that my intuition is spot on once again. I already rue the day when I finish this book (which may be tomorrow).
