Erec Rex is a fun, fast read filled with whimsical, memorable characters. I was really charmed by the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. The central mystery isn't all that mysterious but the characters are likable and well written. Kingsley does an excellent job bringing the reader into Erec's world and keeping the plot moving forward. Great world building, a fun premise and good descriptions all combine to make this an excellent start to a new series. I immediately went searching for the other books as soon as I finished this one.

It was a very complicated series. I urgently want the new book to come out asap. It was so interesting. And nothing like Harry Potter, honestly.

I enjoyed this book at times, but it was difficult to follow. The line between the magical world and the "loser" world was not very clear. For example- springball. Erec started talking like he knew all about it, but he grew up in the "loser" world. I think things could have been a bit more clear. The mother, June, seemed selfish, especially since she convinces her son to commit multiple crimes to try and free her.

Some people have said this is similar to Harry Potter. I can see that in some aspects. The plot reminded me a bit of Goblet of Fire, mixed with Chamber of Secrets. I was not surprised at who the culprit was at the end, and I was also not surprised to find that a certain "shady character" was very Snape-like and was helping them all along.

The ending did seem a bit rushed, and it also leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I didn't love the book, but I'm willing to give the sequel a try. The magical world in the book is very unique, so I'm interested in learning more about it.

I truly enjoyed this book. I liked the writing style and the very creative use of traditional mythological and fantasy elements. There was also some good wordplay which I enjoyed, for example, sneakers are shoes that help you sneak around.

The characters were good and the story exciting and fun.

4.5. Excellent!
At first, like everyone else, I pretty much expected this book to be a blatant ripoff of Harry Potter (and I am a HUGE fan, so I am very protective of anything Potter).
I read this because someone with good taste in books recommended it to me, so I decided I'd give it a try.
I was kind of uncomfortable about the similarities between Erec Rex and Harry Potter at first, but I do realize that many of these things are recurring themes in fantasy in general (magical objects, orphans going on epic quests to fight against evil, etc.).
All in all, though, it is a fabulous book with its own voice and its own story. I very much enjoyed it! I couldn't put it down! And I am most definitely buying the second one tomorrow when I go to work, because I am dying for more Erec Rex.
Kudos to Kaza Kingsley for writing such a fabulous first novel!
