I really enjoyed a lot of this book. Brooks is a wonderful writer, and the audiobook read by him is a nice companion to read this with. I didn’t feel like there was a lot of new information here, but it did lead me to reflect on my own behaviors in ways that I hope are helpful to my friendship-making.

The most impactful non-fiction book I’ve read this year. I loved it so much that immediately after I finished listening to it, I listened to it again and also ordered a paper copy.

My greatest desire is to make each person I interact with feel seen and embraced. This book gave me a lot to work on.

Had some good thoughts and tips. I feel I could most use this information with my calling as a ministering sister.

David Brooks writes practical, applicable information to help you build better relationships with the people in your life. I will be purchasing a copy of this book for my shelf.

The advantages of learning to read other people, as if it were a foreign language.

Not terrible, not amazing
The book is definitely a good starting point, kind of an 'introductory course' that points you in multiple directions to explore this topic differently. It doesn't really have a clear throughline, though, and is just throwing random 'symptoms', 'causes' and 'solutions' at you, all thrown together.
I definitely became more aware of certain things (in the same way that an english lesson makes you aware of the existence of a genitive, which you've been using unconsciously forever) but there are no real revelations in this book for most people.
