I have no words for this book because they will do it no justice.
pretty short book, but well written, with some real depth.
This was a very moving book which led me to appreciate the many changes my children are going through as they grow into young adults: some struggles they'll tell me about and others they'll keep secret. I enjoyed how real the characters were.
I read this book probably back in elementary school, but for some reason it has always stuck with me. It was the first book I read that ever had a haunting, eerie feel to it while still compelling you to read on. I can still remember the Martha's vivid descriptions of the world around her and how gripping that was to me as a young girl. It definitely taught me about kindness and death before I knew how to put the thoughts into words.
A good story but I was dissapointed by some of the language and dialogue between a brother and sister about how to tell when their parents had had sex.
This is a book I know I would have connected to in a special way had I read it as a teenager.
Kevin Henkes is so gifted at writing from the place of understanding when it comes to his age groups. I don’t know how he does it.
All the important teenage stuff was in this story: questioning of purpose, shift in parental trust and relationship, the first kiss and the following drama, and growing through hard things.
Recommended for 12-15 year olds. Not one you need to read as an adult but one that would be great to read with your teenage daughter.
