it wasn’t unreadable, it’s a fun, silly little dark-academia novel. while I think a lot of the psych asides were off the mark and the dialogue was not .. how people talk ? and the plot didn’t advance for a good little while there, hey, it’s fun.

It's been a while since I read a book so quickly! I've been zooming out when reading quite often lately, even books I've absolutely loved.
The story caught my attention almost immediately. Although at the beginning I wasn't sure where would this lead me, I was curious to know more. Everything became more interesting when, Mariana, the protagonist, travels to the campus of Cambridge University, where a gruesome discovery was made.
Mariana is a group therapist who has recently lost her husband. One day, Zoe, her niece, calls her to tell her terrible news: there's been a murder near the campus and her best friend is missing. Mariana feels like there's something else Zoe isn't telling her. She seems scared, so Mariana goes to visit her niece.
Once in the campus, Mariana meets popular and charismatic professor Fosca who has a peculiar group of students called "The Maidens". Mariana is suspicious of professor Fosca and will try to prove he's guilty.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, even though it wasn't what I was expecting. If you want to read a fast paced story, with interesting twists, this might be a good option.

A few years ago, when The Silent Patient came out, all anyone could do was talk about it!! So, I had really high hopes when it came to ‘The Maidens’ and it did not let me down!
TBH, I did not enjoy The Silent Patient as much as I did this book. It’s also set in the same universe as ‘The Silent Patient’ so we are re-introduced to some characters.

Alex Michaelides writes a gripping psychological thriller with dark academia vibes, secret society, a murderer on the loose & of course tying it up all together ‘Greek mythology’!

A troubled group therapist, ‘Marianna’ gets a distressing call from her niece, ‘Zoe’ studying at Cambridge university when one of her friends turns up dead. Marianna finds her way into the investigation partly to protect Zoe but also because she has become obsessed with the charming Greek Tragedy prof ‘Edward’ and is convinced of his guilt.
As Marianna races to uncover the killer, you are taken through the layers of self-discovery and questions such as nature vs nurture and childhood trauma etc.
It’s a classic murder mystery on the surface but with Greek mythology permeating every page giving the story a supernatural vibe. The author throws so many suspicious characters in the way that I had trouble figuring out the end game!

I am not saying I didn’t just that it took a while – always a sign of a good thriller!
Although Marianna was loosely tied to the on goings at the university and may seem like a weird choice for a protagonist, it was good to have a therapist narrate the story.
Loved the book & I cannot wait to read more of his work!
