I couldn't put it down! I was completely drawn to the characters and each of their story. I couldn't wait to see how they connected.
I love how, although a fictional story, there were many aspects based on true events.
It was a beautiful story! One of my favourites to date!

Always wishing these historically based WWII fictions had a little more history and a little less fiction. A big storyline is Sophie being a spy, but it’s also the biggest fictional part of the story. I want stories of women fighting the Nazis to be historically accurate. Even if it means combining a few women’s stories, I’m sure they did novel-worthy things.
But Sophie was a badass. I wish her story ended in a less violent way but I like how Kelly wrote it. Having Piotr there with her.
I don’t understand why Estelle would never mention the Paris apartment, or literally anything to do with it or the war. She must have known that the knowledge of what to do with the paintings would die with her. She couldn’t have left a note saying these belonged to the Wylers? And she appreciated art, but she let them all hide in dark rooms for decades?
And Aviva didn’t speak for months after getting to Switzerland but she knew how to write her name. Her adoptive parents couldn’t ask her to write it down? I’m sure Estelle couldn’t find her because she had a completely different name.
The book was good though, it kept me interested the whole time. Definitely a good read for Nightingale fans.

Giving this 4 stars just because of the ending. Otherwise a fantastic book about a spy in WW2!

The story opens in the summer of 2017 in Paris France to an apartment left empty and buried under years of dust. Aurelia 'Lia" inherits the apartment from her grandmother who seems to have had a secret past. The story is told in two alternate timelines one in 2017 with the point of views of Lia, and the other in the 1940's with the point of views of Estelle Allard and Sophie Seymour which was an intensely gripping back story of the courage these women have gone through fighting the evil of the Nazis. Enjoyed this book (and a Winnipeg author!!)

I love Bowen's writing style in this. The characters, art aspects, and pacing might make this one of my top favourites for WWII fiction. It's also my first dual timeline novel.
