Just okay.

Do not expect this book to be a stellar piece of writing. The plot isn't going to be anything grand, but it is definitely something you can sit down and have a good time with. This book is great for being a palette cleanser when you need a break from binging on a specific genre or for just wanting a short and sweet book to pass the time. I personally have been searching for a good mafia romance book and I am happy to say that Painted Scars delivered. I found the book enjoyable. I loved how Nina overcame her trauma to better her relationship with Roman and to let go of the past; I enjoyed the different characters that were introduced; I also very much appreciated seeing a mafia boss actually do mafia business (the first mafia book I have ever read was hyperfocused on a possessive mafia boss who followed around his wife while she attended classes and studied). Despite this book being quite short, I feel like Altaj did well in creating a plot that gave enough that corresponded with the book length. There weren't any plot holes - at least none that I could spot - and the details weren't lacking. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

It was a little quick but in reality, it works. Nina is sarcastic, very sassy, and I loved her, she made me laugh a lot. the image of Roman with a chihuahua will stay etched in my head. but I think that more depth to the story and the traumas of the characters would have been great, that didn't stop me from having a good time

the moment when Roman said to Nina « MARRY ME AND ILL STOP THE WAR » oh god yes

I actually really liked this. It was so sweet and romantic, and the characters are great. 💗 Nina and Roman balance each other out perfectly and they're both nuts in their own ways.

LOVED that Roman is physically disabled and uses a wheelchair. I've read hundreds of books and this is probably only the 2nd book I've read with a physically disabled MMC. And I absolutely loved it. 🥰 Thank you for realistically showing that recovery is not a linear process and thank you for not magically curing him at the end. He may use crutches and the wheelchair forever and THAT IS OKAY. 💗

One thing that dragged down my rating and makes me very reluctant to give this a 4 stars (which was what I originally wanted to rate it) is the third act breakup. 😑

WHY?! It was so damn unnecessary! 🤯 The third act breakup literally came OUT OF NOWHERE. Over something so stupid! It felt like such a contrived conflict and forced upon our characters for absolutely no reason and then painfully dragged out. 😮‍💨

Otherwise, this was a really great introduction to Neva Altaj. 💗 I'm looking forward to other books by her. I just hope the third act breakup doesn't become a common trope she uses. 🙏🏻

It was meh

if you know me, you know I love a mafia book but also throw in a marriage of convenience & I’m sold! I also think i have a thing for Russian Mafia men whose names start with an R. I first loved Ronan Markov and now Roman Petrov… YEP. low level spice and I shocking still loved it so much. I need a man to call me malysh/malyshka ughhhh
