I’m a little sceptical of this book for the simple fact that it was written by a cis man, and the drag Queen scenes seemed horribly stereotyped, but I’m going to put those issues aside for this review because frankly I don’t know enough about Craig Silvey or Drag Queens to hold an informed opinion about it.

At first this book seemed like it was using traumatic events for a bit of shock and cheap empathy, but it didn’t stay that way. I zoomed through this book and I loved the scenes with the therapist, because most depictions of therapy in media that I’ve seen show it as a negative or funny thing, and never just a realistic showing of what it’s like. While they were a little dramatised (it’s a book that needs to be entertaining at the end of the day), I related to the atmosphere and the way the therapist asked questions. I liked being able to see how all the things that had happened to the POV character affected their thoughts and actions (from a psychological perspective) and that’s what drove the story for me.

This was a weird review, I kind of just don’t know what to think, would love to hear other thoughts about it!

Yeah, it's been ages since I've DNFed a book.
It's been in my TBR since before it came out because I remember really loving the writing in Jasper Jones, and wanting to read something else from Craig Silvey. Unfortunely, this one has been not only really subpar in terms of writing, but also a complete fucked-up series of really fucked-up events.

I just wanted everyone to stop fucking touching this poor kid! Not even if it's a friendly tap on the shoulder or from the really nice drag queens!
I DNFed when the 14-year-old trans kid is trying to give a handjob to the (harmless) elder man who's taken him/her in because it's the only thank you he/she can think of. Whatever pronouns the kid settles on eventually, good for you, full support, but I cannot possibly go further on.

I flippin' LOVED this book. Maybe not quite as much as Silvey's "Jasper Jones," but nevertheless, this is an absolutely wonderful coming-of-age tale that I'd recommend to anyone. Silvey can write his ass off.
