Wow! I picked this up on a few whim when I looked at the Hot Read’s bookshelf at the libray. Having just finished Useful by Debra Oswald, I was struck by the similarity of the themes, even the way both books open with an attempted suicide. I felt that this one was the grittier of the two, the one I spent cheering on the lead character willing him to succeed. I felt he was an innocent in the scenario, that life had dealt him a dud hand but the love of those who became defacto family just light save him as long as he can learn to trust.

I think this is another book I will be thinking about for a while.

Oh my god this took forever for me - the longest in months it’s taken me to finish one book. Is this what being back at studying is going to be like?

Fella Bitzgerald HAS to be my favourite name for a drag queen, ever.

Updated review: Read for Book Club. I still found this a quick read and would possibly drop it to 3.5 but it has still held it's own for me. I think it is a good novel to open up conversations around transgender issues for general and YA readers. The characters and storylines though are quite stereotyped. I read a review that suggested a middle-aged cis male author could have written a better novel from the perspective of Vic and I kind of agree. I am looking forward to the conversation sparked by this book.
Original review: Despite the bleak storyline, this is a book of warmth, love and hope. I read it in a few days as I just couldn't put it down. It reads like YA, but I found some of it very confronting and would definitely want to speak with my young teens if they wanted to read it.
