I’m conflicted over the dei ex machina in this novel and whether these moments cheapen it or allow us to explore new ideas.

The book got me in the feels and I won’t forget it, so I’m rating it highly even though I don’t feel like it was perfect. Probably a 4.5 if half-points were allowed.

A heartbreakingly beautiful story of a young person navigating a harsh and cruel world. Honeybee is a beautifully written book about Sam, a transgender teen, born a male but never truly feeling right in that body and longing to be accepted as who they truly wish to be.

Honeybee was distressing at times, exploring some heavy themes including self harm, suicide, domestic and drug abuse. However, this is a truly powerful read and if you can, pick this up and give it a go.

It will take me months, if not years, to forget the story of Sam and Vic. It was heart wrenching and real. A story about hope, resilience and self discovery.

Silvey has noted that as a straight cis-gender man, he welcomes scrutiny of his ethics, process and intention in telling a story that does not emerge from his own experience. I also do not believe I am in a position to comment on the representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, I feel like Silvey has done a remarkable job at presenting this topic with respect and sensitivity (correct me if wrong).

This was one of my most favourite reads to date.
