4.5 stars. I ate this book the way Aggie ate those brownies. This book was great, but there were some things that I wish happened in this story. So I'm just going to say what I didn't like right now.

1) It was weirdly positive...I didn't really like how they just randomly threw in the bee costume after mentioning it in the LAST 100 PAGES. And I found the cooking school thing was not really needed in my opinion.

I liked everything else. I loved Aggie I think she was my favourite character next to Vic, and I liked how it was NOTHING like Jasper Jones.

Hard, lovely, painful and gentle. Silvey delves into the intricates of trust and identity, and the pain of complex relationships and trauma with a trademark minimalism that gives the characters room to breathe. Some of the events, especially near the end, where the people in Victoria's life go to great lengths to track her down and offer her opportunities felt a bit staged - that many people, one after the other, wouldn't necessarily put in that much effort to find someone they don't necessarily know that much about. This might be my own pessimism seeping through, however. Or it might be because we are seeing the interactions from Victoria's POV, so her self-doubt makes the relationships seem slightly less developed than they actually are.

A sad, tense but sweet book. The characters were likeable and interesting, which was a reprieve from the trauma

This was a very heavy and moving read that I could not put down. I adored the characters, I found them well written and became so heavily invested in the outcome for each person's story. I picked up this book as a fan of Craig Silvey's previous work. As a fan of stories about people from completely different cultures and communities to myself I usually try to find stories written by authors from those backgrounds. I really enjoyed Honeybee as an outstanding entry to Silvey's catalogue but I'm now off to seek out stories written by members of the Trans and gender non-conforming community.
