I absolutely adored this book as a child, but as an adult I cannot fathom why. I do respect how dark this is; it is funny how things you read as a kid go right past you until you're ready for them.
I loved this series as a child and now even as a young woman I still enjoy diving into books from these series. This novel was a new one for me and I truly enjoyed diving into the world of Cleopatra. Being a huge ancient history fan, this one was a fun, quick and educational read.

If I hadn't read an amazing Cleopatra biography by Stacy Schiff a couple of weeks ago, my rating would most likely be higher. It was, however, interesting reading an interpretation of a glimpse into Cleopatra's early life; but, I think that I had what Cleopatra was like in her later years ingrained in my mind, which is not a terrible thing, because I think that Gregory did an adequate job displaying some of Cleopatra's later character traits. However, I think that because a lot of this novel was interpretive, it lost its charm for me at times. If I was an elementary or middle school student reading this, I would have absolutely loved it! So I think that Gregory definitely wrote for her target audience and was successful.
Even though this is fictional and I read it in elementary school, I really enjoyed it because it had some historical accuracy and it had excitement for eight-year-old me.
As this was my first Royal Diary I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was happy to see they still have the same charm that Dear America and My Name is America has. I really enjoyed it. I went through it pretty quickly once I sat down to actually read it. I thought it was well written and kept me intrigued and wanting read. 4.5 out of 5 stars. I loved it.
"Cleopatra VII: Daughter of The Nile" by Kristiana Gregory is, the royal diary of Cleopatra VII as she lives in Egypt during her father's rule before she became pharaoh.
I would give "Cleopatra VII: Daughter of The Nile" by Kristiana Gregory a 4-star review because, 1; this isn't really historically accurate it is a good introduction to Cleopatra as a middle schooler since this is, a middle school aged book 2; I really enjoyed this more now than I did in middle school and it was a great reread for me

The next on my list of books to re-read from my childhood! (I will be going through the entire series. Currently I am reading what I have in alphabetical order, but (and this was after I decided on that) I thought it would be interesting to read them in chronological order...next time!)
Anyway, Cleopatra. At the end of this one, in the notes about her and her history, it seemed like the author made this diary with the help not from Cleo's own diary but writings about her from other sources. And I am actually okay with that, I mean, c'mon, this is from 57 B.C.
I thought her voice was interesting. She was 12-14 years old for the entirety of the book and yet she spoke as one older, wiser, more mature. Possibly a fabrication by the author, but it's a possibility that Cleopatra was actually like this. She had an older sister who despised anyone getting in her way for the throne; another older sister that seemed to be more about the way she looked then anything else; younger siblings that cared only for toys and playthings; and to top it all off a drunk father who other rulers felt free to mock, even to his face! All of this, I'm sure, would add up to a young girl, barely a teenager, to become someone of a much older standing.
Reading about her adventures in ancient Rome make me envious, I could do without the smells but to see the ancient columns and statues would be amazing! And the fact that at that time the Alexandria Library and Lighthouse was still standing? AMAZING! Sights that would take your breath away!
This is a good book for any young girl who is interested in learning about princesses from the past. Especially because it gives a glimpse into the lives that they had and it shows the not-so-fun things about being a princess.
