Really nice story! darius has depression and gets picked on and has never felt like himself. But he goes to Iran and meets Sohrob. Suddenly its all easier, he is himself and he isn't perfect but he's happy. I think the story shows the importance of nice relationships in your life and how 1 good friend can change everything.

If I was younger then I would've eaten this up

FUCK. this hit me in all my teenage trauma points and i loved it for that because it handled them so well. it really forced me to look back at who i was as a teenager with more empathy and understanding for how i coped, and i guess i needed that lmao. sometimes a therapist looks like an unsuspecting ya novel.

me and darioush understand zereshk polo supremacy.
also i have a strong hatred for romanization as a concept
anyway! persians amirite!

This was absolutely lovely: a touching coming-of-age story about a Persian-American teenager taking his first trip to Iran to visit his dying grandfather. The characters felt so real, especially Darius himself, and the relationships between the different family members were so nuanced and relatable. I really liked Darius's relationship to his father and how their clinical depression had affected both of them in different ways. I loved how much I learnt about Iran from it, too, and all the descriptions of food were amazing. I started this book around 12:30am thinking I’d only read a chapter or two, but I was hooked and finished it in one sitting! My ONLY complaint is some of the writing felt a bit lazy in portions, but overall, I highly recommend this book

Loved this book! A young boy who’s nerdy in the most endearing ways explores his culture as a mixed child. So relatable on many levels. Beautiful, real, raw. Lots of heart!
