Work from home 2020: book 33.
Unread shelf project 2020: book 28.

I can see why Ann Rule is praised as one of the best true crime authors from the 80s and 90s. Glad I finally tried a book of hers! I own several of her books, all unread except for this one; I’m glad I have those stashed for a rainy day!

She did have several odd turns of phrase, however, such as saying something was an odd “mind picture” instead of “mental image.” But that wasn’t enough to make me dislike her work; it just made me go “wait what?” for a moment. Slightly distracting.

One thing I know I’ll never tire of is Ann Rule’s writing. Every time I pick up one of her books I know it’s a guaranteed good read and there’s something very priceless about that! This wasn’t my absolute fave by her but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I prefer her longer stories over her shorter ones and this collection was mostly shorter ones.

The way this book praises and sympathizes with cops while at the same time telling the story of how the police systemically advanced and utterly failed to stop an escalating abuser (who extremely predictably) turned killer is far beyond my patience and not worth my time. Book also includes several moments of sexism as an added bonus. First and last Ann Rule I’ll try to read.

I would have given this four stars if the focus was on one story. The research and character development that this author puts into her work are indisputable. I just like these anthologies less than the books that focus on one particular case. This featured one longer story and then other shorter ones. I supposed not all crimes are sensational enough to need their own book. It does serve as a reminder that there are police out there who do not have the best interest of the public at heart, and that you must always be vigilant no matter who you are in contact with or what you are doing.
