now I understand why budgets wouldn’t have allowed them to adapt this for the second season, but I much, much prefer that book to… whatever the show had going on.

I give credit to the author for telling a new story with the familiar characters from a different point of view. This book is just as much a thrill as the Alienist, but introducing even more historical topics of interest and social questions of yesteryear that prompts us to consider if society has made any progress since the turn of the 20th century.

This book progressed in opposite fashion than The Alienist — we learn who the culprit is pretty quickly. The rest of the book is spent trying to understand this person’s past and how they came to be the way they are. This structure took a bit out of the suspense and general flow of the plot.
However, the majority of the book is the same fun, speculative adventure as The Alienist. I loved the introspective analysis on gender theories and getting to see more of the characters I love.
Sara Howard also has one of the greatest quotes in literary history: “there is nothing like a bullet in the leg to make men mind their manners.”

Loved this even more than the Alienist...which I didn't think was possible. Dark and brooding but smart with strong characters, just like it's predecessor.

Very good sequel to [b:The Alienist|40024|The Alienist (Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, #1)|Caleb Carr|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388256626s/40024.jpg|2266643]. This one has a very creepy villain.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, probably more than the first book. The POV character (Stevie, from the first novel) is a delightful choice, and I must admit to getting misty at the end wrap up.
This setting, and these characters, deserve several more outings.
