This one wasn't as bad as the last one. 2 broken people lean on each other to heal. I wasn't going to continue this series, but I feel I have to since I liked this one.

As much as I really was looking forward to this book, I was unable to understand the perplexing, conflicting feeling I had while reading it. I have a strong interest in the hate-to-love and childhood-friends-to-lovers tropes However, I believe that this book has just fallen short of my expectationsđ
This is one of the most absurd hate-to-love book tropes I have ever encountered. Regardless of their hatred, Cal and Nellie have been secretly in love since high school. And it seems that they express their love language for one another by harassing one another. It makes sense why the book has this title. Their banter was really confusing as hell, there also were no sweet moments or chemistry between them. They actually insult one another constantly, yet they also constantly desire for one another. One moment they had tense arguments, the next they had sex, then becoming distant again. Days or weeks pass before they meet one another, have sex, and insult each other once more. They simply never stop doing those irritating cycles. And it's pretty annoyed me that muchđ
Nevertheless, the epilogue and bonus epilogue will make up for it. And once more, I was able to finish this in less than a day. On top of that, I would like to acknowledge Cindy Kay and Connor Crais for narrating this book. I liked how great they portrayed the characters and described them so well that I didn't lose interest in the book because of the annoying plot.
I still merely curious to see where the author will take us in the upcoming book, as the epilogue gave us a sneak peek at what happens with Larke. I will undoubtedly read The Brawl immediately following this! đ„đđ»ââïž

ngl, until the halfway mark, I did find both main characters annoying.
First of all, no matter how famous or hot you are, you should never EVER take someone else's diary and read it! Even if it's the diary of the person that you like!
Second of all the miscommunication in this novel?? Gosh I actually couldnt stand it! Yes, i know, it's the theme of this book. But sometimes I just want them to be honest and clear the air!!
But then I could see just ho vulnerable they are. How Nellie had to constantly prove herself as a scholarship student amongst those rich kids and how Cal was dead set on not letting people in. Because, as he said, he's better at having people hate him than love him.
So I gave this a solid four. I mean no matter how frustrated I was with with book, I did manage to finish it in a day! Next? The Brawl!

Most of the time, as I was reading this book, my heart was hurting for both Nellie and Cal. Cal was rich but poor where it counts, on family. With an abusive father who forced him to excel in football, he had to hide his heart from people. He has a huge good heart but lives in fear of being hurt. Therefore, he lives with a poker face and acts like a jerk. On the other hand, Nellie has a father who is a gardener and a mother who is a store clerk, but sheâs rich in family love. She attended the same school as Cal, for rich and entitled kids, as a scholarship kid, and was subjected to bullying, starting with Cal.
Their story is rich in nasty encounters and both share the same best friend, Pierce, so inevitably theyâve had to face frequent encounters, rife with heckling. But underneath all that fighting, is a strong chemistry that threatens to turn into something more.
I was sad at Calâs loneliness and mad at Nellie for trying to get Cal to leave Calamity. I found she was so hurtful, but then remember how Cal treated her during their high school years. In the end, I hurt for both because deep under the hostilities there was love and attraction that only needed a reason to come out.
There was one character that I loved: Harry. Sheâs the mother of the motelâs owner, Marly, where Cal was staying. She befriended Cal, sheâs a woman of very few words and those she does utter have purpose. She doesnât mix her words and gives it to Cal straight and true. I loved their nights of sitting in camp chairs, looking at the stars, enjoying a quiet companionship.
Initially, this book bugged me, it was so different from Devney Perryâs style. I love enemies to lovers stories but in this one, Nellie was vicious in her hate toward Cal and she hurt him several times. Then I compared it to other enemies to lovers by this author, and in the comparison, I found my answer. In other stories, the enmity had a reason outside of their relation, but in this case, their enmity came from the treatment Cal gave Nellie when they were in high school. In a sense, both were broken, Cal with a crappy father and Nellie with a crappy high school existence that left her feeling less than. It felt nearly impossible for them to overcome their hostility and I very nearly gave up on them. I was angry at Nellie and sad for Cal. And very happy when they got their HEA!
