A great novel. It’s a fable but it’s also got this nerdy metaphysics to dig into. Best of both worlds.
I read this book in parallel with my 10yo son. He bounced right off it, but I loved it.
It's so refreshing to read something this well written, not the boilerplate prose of other fantasy novels. The world building was great, if a little rushed.
I really enjoyed the unusual pacing, but I can see why that might put a kid off.
It's hard to explain, but it feels like I'm a kid discovering a story more than an adult reading a story that was clearly storyboarded by another adult? Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is the only other book I've read recently that did that as well.

The book was groundbreaking during its time, but just not for me. The story runs forward with years gone in just a few pages and short descriptions of battles. I prefer more slower paced high fantasy with hard(core) magic systems; And thus while 15yo me would have probably loved this book, I won't be reading more of the series.

A beautifully written book. Very slow plot in the middle, but it picks up in the end. Vetch was a lot of fun as a character
