Interesting, but not as compelling as Outlander
I felt that this story was a bit more disjointed and harder to follow. It was a good filler while I wait for her next book.

3.5 stars. I liked this further dip into this character and his world. This book moves much quicker than some of the latter Outlander books, which also gave me joy. I will continue the series.
I wasn't expecting too much from this book based on some of the reviews I had read, but I found that I enjoyed it very much. I do like historical mysteries, and this book reminded me more of Anne Perry's books than of the Outlander books that it is spun off of (and which I enjoy very much), but that wasn't a problem for me. I'll definitely be looking for more of the John Grey books.
It's just not as interesting to me without the time travel element.

Quick and fun, and a refreshing change from the high-minded and intricate Outlander novels. Lord John is a great character.
Meh. I don't know what to make of this one.
I love LJG, and I loved hearing his inner monologue... But the plot of this one was strange. It was confusing, but I knew if I kept reading it would all make sense in the end. And it did, for the most part. The issue was: how we got there.
One of the characters ends up explaining most of the murder mystery/plot at the end; it wasn't exactly unraveled by John Grey. He picks up some clues, and he is extremely brave, but he doesn't actually solve anything?

Lord John is an interesting character and I love him in the Outlander books. However, I feel like this is a slower vehicle for his character to shine in. The mystery wasn’t that interesting but the characters are so it’s a mixed bag. I am not sure that I will continue with the series because this book didn’t really engage me.
OK, Gabaldon. That ending better better have introduced Lord John's love interest. This was intriguing and somewhat unpredictable. I enjoyed it.
