The first half of the book was rather dull, and it took a lot for me to keep going. But I trust in the author as I love her Outlander books and the second alf if the book was much better. I think the first part was just way to out there for me and I really didn't care about the characters at all. The second half I still didn't care about the characters but I wanted to know how the story ended.
Lord John is kind of a dull character, I think, in this series. If here weren't gay, he'd be pretty a pretty boring guy! However, I liked this. It was an interesting point of view in regards to the Outlander series. This was more of a murder-mystery type of story, which I enjoy. I think I'll be reading the rest of this series.

If you're expecting another Outlander book, that's not what you're going to get. This is a much more manageable read, and while I wouldn't say I'm addicted to the Lord John series as much as I am to the main series itself, I will say that I find these books quite enjoyable. If you like the character of Lord John (and who wouldn't?!), then you should like sinking your teeth in to this book and the others in the series. John is so witty and delightful, and the plot is actually quite a lovely little mystery, with intricate twists and turns that kept me invested right up until the end. You don't have to read this book to jive with the main series, but when you get up to the later books in Outlander (7 and 8 particularly), it's nice to have a firmer grasp on Lord John as a character, as well as on the myriad people who make up his life.
