Outlander is one of my favorite series of all time and I enjoy buddy reading all of those books with my friends. Given that we are all caught up on the main series and have read the short story collection, we decided to start the Lord John series. For me, this was a bit of a disappointment. I had a really hard time keeping all of the characters straight. The plot was interesting (it read a lot like a Sherlock Holmes story) and I did want to uncover the big mystery, but I also felt like I had to force myself to pick it up and finish. I love the writing (as usual) but this just can't compare to the main Outlander storyline.

This book counts for Popsugar 2023 for a historical fiction book and for the magical readathon adventures in Aeldia 2023 for May, a book that ends on an odd page number .

I love Lord John Grey( both book and TV version) and the whole Outlander world so much but parts of this book were incredibly boring to me. I didn't love it as much as I wanted to but it was still a good book overall.

The first full sized novel featuring Lord John Grey.

The reader is introduced to a little bit of Lord John's life, such as his family, his place within society and politics. The mysteries and intrigues in this book were so engrossing though I found the resolution kind of anti-climatic.

I loved all the historical details about the gay scene in 18th Century London, and of the death sentence syphilis presented. Lord John's homosexuality is explored a bit more in this book, and I began to see the need for secrecy and the paranoia that inevitable must accompany such a secret in the time period.

All in all the story was intriguing but I felt the book was dragged on a little longer than it needed to be.

I love Lord John! He is honorable, witty, empathetic, and deeply complex. His series is my ultimate comfort reading go-to. I always want to come back to them and once again enjoy the characters central to this series. 😍

I didn't hate this book because I do like Lord John and enjoy reading more about his life. But the plot was so confusing and twisted that I was lost most of the time. Could have been better.
