I had to read this for a book discussion group. Fortunately, I had read the first several books in the Outlander series, because the main character kept referring back to characters in that book. I think it would have been a hard read had I not read those other titles.

I know if I enjoyed this book just because I really like John Grey. I wish there was more about Jamie, though.
I think von Namtzen is a cool guy!

It was fun learning some more about Lord John I'm looking forward to reading the rest while waiting for the next outlander book

Certainly this was a very private matter. Far more historical mystery than the main series, the question of "honor" shapes all the characters' interactions. It has all the detail you expect from Diana Gabaldon, immersing you in the daily life of an English military officer.

Lord John Grey makes me want to reread Outlander, which is ridiculously disproportionate, and at least two of the MANY books were a slog. But man am I here for the way John deals with obstacles. He has this quality of resigned exasperation that I find so hilarious. But his keen intelligence still comes across, and I found myself engaged in the mystery and how John would have to navigate the labyrinth of social propriety to find out everything he needed to solve it.

The cast of characters around him were also delightfully juicy, and I’m excited to start the next one.
