I liked this installment quite a lot. Things were wrapped up.
I didn't care for the torture scene, and in general, I agreed more with Michael than Harry,
but I still really liked the book.

I was excited for the premise, but I just couldn't stay interested for very long. Perhaps it was the faith element; perhaps it was the lack of Bob. Still an enjoyable read.

Finally getting into some overarching plot but it does feel a little all over the place in this one. Too many plotlines and needed more focus.

Five books into the Dresden Files and the quality has been pretty consistent. Same strengths, same flaws, same everything. This book won't suddenly change your mind about the series in any way for better or for worse. The mystery this time around plays out like an episode of Supernatural which is fine because I really liked the first few seasons of that show. Its very heavy on its own brand of Christianity lore and while sometimes it got overbearing, I never hated it.

What I did hate was that they introduced a wise old katana-weilding japanese man who imparts all sorts of sage wisdom onto Harry. Its very very eehhhhhhh and probably could have been handled better to say the least. There were two aspects that kind of broke it for me. First, the villain also uses a Katana like this is one of my Japanese animes. Second, I was listening to this on audiobook, and the narrator decided to do an asian accent for the character. Its real rough at first, but the narrator does ease up a bit on it as the book progresses. Despite the character being kinda eye-rolling, there are some bright spots with the character.

Ending was a big let down though. Like other book endings, this feels like its meant more for set up for future books than to be a proper conclusion. Instead of any sense of finality, it actually walks back some character development. On paper, I would be super for it, but it's such a bizarre, sudden, and out-of-left field turn that went against most of what the book had been saying about Dresden's character.

This was far from my favorite Dresden File book, but I suppose I still had fun. These really are popcorn reads best enjoyed between other books.

I liked this one best so far...
