In some ways, this does not feel like a Book 1 - it's coming on the heels of some very significant events: Spider-Man and Green Goblin have apparently died in a battle with each other, and the book starts with a memorial service for Peter Parker. For me, the story was serviceable, but the artwork was very good - I enjoyed looking at the humans, Green Goblin looked incredible, the fire looked great!
Bendis is a lot better and writing character driven stories than he is events, and this is a great series with lots of interesting elements and Miles is certainly one of my favourite versions of Spider-Man.
adventurous
Put me down as thinking that it was a bad idea to resurrect Peter and Norman, but if it had to be done, this is a pretty good way to do it.
Miles really needs his own villains, though.

Incomplete story that introduces some BIG questions with literally zero pay-off. Not worthy of being a standalone volume/collection. I'd give it 1 star but there's at least some some creative art in here and some great Miles-Ganke banter.
I suppose Peter coming back was inevitable, even if I feel like it was way too soon. But with Secret Wars on the horizon, I imagine Bendis did what he could.
Miles Morales has my heart. He is a superb character! Bendis did a great job bringing Miles to life in this volume. I had never read anything with Miles Morales before. Honestly, I was a little afraid to. I only knew Peter Parker as Spider-Man and have long gotten past that rigidity since the Spider-Verse arc and the Superior Spider-Man arc. Finally, I decided to give good ole' Ultimate Spider-Man a try, and I regret not jumping on sooner.
This is not the first official volume that features Miles, but it was the first one I could get my hands on. Now, I want to go back and read all the previous volumes that have his backstory. Ideally, I plan on getting my hands on the Ultimate Spider-Man collections. The first volume looking like this...

However, just because I did not know all of Miles' backstory did not hinder me from enjoying this. Like I said, Bendis did a great job bringing Miles into his own, without being a part of a team. Here he is the Spider-Man, and therefore gets the whole, "With great power comes great responsibility." shtick thrust upon him.
There is a great blend between action and personal dramas many of these young superheroes are plagued with. And I eat up those youthful problems, involving parents, lovers, friends etc. It makes the heroes more genuine and relate-able in my opinion.
My consensus is that if you haven't given Ultimate Spider-Man a try, maybe because you love Peter Parker and don't want anyone to take his place, just try it. If you hate it, then don't keep reading. But, if you love it like I did, then you will be very happy you gave this book a try.
Go Miles!
