Audiobook at the gym. I think honestly my top gym book of the year? Or one of them? It's filling a very specific genre space.
I wish I could give this 4.5 stars, the anticipation that it left me with made it almost impossible to put down! It left you wanting to finish the book because you didn’t know what was going to happen and the twist at the end was slightly predictable but still enough of a shock factor!
3.5 stars
Summer and Leo live off the grid & on the road. Each of them has secrets they’re keeping from the world, and each other. But they need each other to make the new life they’ve created together work. So when Leo goes missing while either working a potential mark or potentially falling in love, Summer gets herself invited to a billionaire’s weekend retreat on a private island in search of her friend. What happened to Leo? What’s going to happen to Summer as she tries to find her? This book keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish!

My sister recommended this book for me and I think it was a great recommendation. I felt the pacing of it was done really well, it doesn't take long for us to get into the action of the story. I also enjoyed these two off-grid ladies just taking advantage of the rich. For me I felt the only reason it was a 4 instead of 5 was the twist was a little predictable and I think most people would agree with that. It's a little obvious about halfway through so it makes the "reveal" not hit very hard at all. I still enjoyed the book, but in my opinion thrillers should have a big twist that you don't see coming and I just didn't get that.

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
3.5, rounded up. This is a solid summer read--a fast-paced popcorn thriller following two women navigating the sinister secrets of the wealthy in the tech industry as they try to escape a private island. (The White Lotus comparisons are apt.) The pacing falters in spots, and there's an issue with tense congruity (some chapters are in past, others in present) that might be a conscious choice--can't get into it too much without revealing spoilers--or is an oversight that would hopefully be fixed before publication. Overall, it's a fun book with just enough cat-and-mouse drive and a twist that's easily predictable but still shocking enough to keep one reading.

I love the back and forth narration. And the timeline from both POV!

I really liked this. My only real complaint was that it was a little slow at parts. And I did kind of guess the ending fairly early on but it's written well enough that I didn't mind that so much.
A feminist thriller that isn't actually feminist at all...
I was super excited to dig into this after all the glowing reviews and I can certainly see where they are coming from. This was a juicy read that gets right into it and I flew through it in 2 days. There was hardly a dull moment and so much suspense that kept me turning the pages.
Plus, I am obsessed with feminist con artist stories with morally grey protagonists, men who get their comeuppance and witty commentary. Think • The Lies I Tell • Stone Cold Fox • The Social Climber • How I'll Kill You.
But well, that's just what this book pretends to be because it doesn't actually care about other female characters beyond the two main leads. One woman from a lower social class, who has been bullied and intimidated her whole life, is further bullied and intimidated by our dear protagonists. Another woman is dumbed down. Both are gotten rid of after they are no longer of use to the plot despite their character arcs having so much potential and them deserving so much better.
Turns out all that the book preaches is just performative.
The story also lost steam for me around halfway through. Some things weren't hard to figure out and the novel suddenly turned into some weird action thriller with wholly different vibes. The final chapter felt contrived and I ain't buying it.
Overall, a fun binge that soured. It went downhill from 4 stars to 3.5 stars and finally to 3 stars.
