A fun epic adventure of wandering and learning... Honestly I was highly distracted while I listened to this audio book bit out was relaxing me on a stressful work day and I really appreciated that.

It felt like a classic and yet surreal and magical adventure of old t le like a Gulliver's adventures,  Arabian nights or a Treasure Island

This book was exceptionally clever-- I'd read it as a much younger person, but it was a delight to re-read.

The real world was full of magic, so magical worlds could easily be real.

This was fun! And I'm honestly kinda surprised about that. This was my first time reading from Rushdie, and somehow I expected that the tone of this would be more sombre, even though it's YA/middle grade? But this was a whimsical little adventure about a boy and his father who loves to tell stories, the journey they go on and the people/creatures they meet. Lots of wordplay and puns, a little silly in places, but intentionally so. It was also super frank, and had a lot of real world parallels. Admittedly, I didn't particularly love anything about this, and parts of it did kinda make me roll my eyes, but overall, this was kind of a nice surprise.

Found this one a bit of a chore unfortunately!

I loved the fairytale presentation and a lot of the language is very witty and enjoyable, but there was something missing at the heart of this which left me feeling cold. I think one of the problems I had was that, although this was written for a 12 year old, I can't imagine anyone that age liking it? The adventure is a bit tepid and I think the way it was written felt quite impersonal and lacked joy.

Maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind for this, but I just got very little from it and the humour in it all didn't really mesh with me.

Perhaps one to revisit in the future!

This book has to be one of my all time favorites and I will never stop recommending it. And when you know the story behind why Rushdie wrote this, and the messages that he is trying to convey? All the more powerful. And the fact that he does it in the form of a child's book? Stunning. Please. Please read this.
