At times this book felt a little like it hadn’t been proof read - typos and incoherency with the story. This hindered my enjoyment of the book as the story itself and characters were enjoyable!
I really really wanted to like this and give this author a chance with her first book but I just can’t get past the writing of this. It feels so much like a first draft and could really do with some further editing
Formula One, women in motorsports, romance… Need I say less? This debut novel by Kayla James shocked me and I could not put it down. Blake is a fierce little lady who finally gets her chance to race in F1. Ryder is a broody former British world champion coming back from a head injury. They find themselves as teammates and decide that they are in this together.
As a massive F1 fan, I found that James was able to blend the romance and the F1 worlds quite well, and even got fairly technical with references to the sport, without making it confusing to the reader. When it comes to F1 romance, I’ve read quite a few, but I would say that no one has done it better than Kayla James. I have to say that I can pick up on the little tiny details that make the story less believable regarding the sport and I have to say that James did her research and I had no qualms with the technical aspects discussed in the story.
Now to characters: Blake was fierce, competitive, and a force to be reckoned with on the track. She was a compelling MC and I was rooting for her each step of the way. She’s F1 first female driver in 20 years and she is blowing the world away. Ryder is a former world champion and feeling lost after losing family and his career in the past few years. He’s back on the track and trying to prove to the world that he can be the best again is his only ambition, until a certain rookie driver comes along.
This book felt like a warm hug while reading it. The F1 world, the romance, the found family, discussions on grief and PTSD, mental health representation, it covered SO much and it did it effortlessly. I’m still in shock that this is a debut novel. Props to Kayla James. What a ride this was.
Thank you to Kayla James and Love Notes PR for giving me the opportunity to read this book as an ARC.
Now I’m just so excited about the F1 season being back this week! If only we actually had a female driver in the mix…

ARC review
for starters, I love that this story included a female driver and focused a lot on her and her journey. I'm new to Formula 1 and am a fan for sure, but of course we mostly read and watch men in other stories and on tv, it was refreshing to see a woman be the lead especially during women's history month.
The story was captivating from the beginning, the flashback was the perfect hook to draw me in and had me wanting to continue reading.
The references for Formula 1 terms were very helpful. I had a vague understanding of certain words considering I've read other F1 novels, but having each one properly defined made a difference.
These two were literally the cutest, I would say this is he falls first and harder because the minute Ryder sees Blake he's absolutely smitten with her. Sick scenes are something I absolutely love because it shows how much the characters care about one another and this didn't disappoint. It was actually her taking care of him which is different and I adored it. This book just flowed pretty well and was so easy to get into.
I thought it was cool that news articles and social media posts were included in between chapters. I've never seen that done before and thought it was such a cute concept. It gives an outsider's view in a way.
There were moments where I was like why are y'all like this when they gave into their desires and immediately regretted it. I always feel really bad for the FMCs in those moments because they're always blaming themselves.
Overall this was a great read and I would love to read another book by this author.
